Restoring the Factory Image on Your La Salle High School Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga

Now that you are leaving La Salle High School, you may re-image your tablet. This will remove all La Salle High School restrictions and software and delete all data on your tablet. Make sure your data is backed up prior to proceeding.

With this guide, you should have received a USB flash drive which contains a restore image. This drive is your recovery media. It will be used to restore your system to its factory state. It is important that you do not modify or save any files on your recovery media. Doing so may prevent you from being able to restore your computer.

Overview

Restoring your tablet to its original state requires three general steps, listed below.

  1. Restore the BIOS to factory defaults.
  2. Restore the operating system to its default state.
  3. Configure the operating system.

The order of these steps is important. If you do not restore your BIOS to factory defaults, you will not be able to restore your operating system; if you do not restore the operating system, you cannot configure it!

Wireless Driver

Some seniors have reported issues with wireless not working on their laptop's factory image. To fix the issue, you need to update your wireless driver. Follow these steps:

  1. Before you restore your computer, download Intel Wireless Drivers 19.60.0 as a ZIP file (click the download arrow near the top right). Store it on your restore flash drive or on your SD card.
  2. After restoring your factory image, extract the ZIP file to a folder.
  3. In the extracted folder, run dpinst64 and click through to update the drivers.
  4. When installation is complete, restart your computer.

What You Will Need

  1. Your recovery media issued by La Salle High School.
  2. Your Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga laptop computer and charger.
  3. This guide.
  4. About 30-60 minutes.

Restore the BIOS to Factory Defaults

The first step to restoring your tablet is to reset the BIOS settings. At La Salle, we restrict settings in the BIOS to improve security. In order for you to be able to boot your recovery media, you need to remove these restrictions. If your hard drive is encrypted, all of your data will be inaccessible after this step!

  1. Start with the computer powered on and plugged-in to your charger.
  2. Restart the computer by opening the Start Screen, clicking the power symbol, and clicking Restart.
  3. As the computer reboots, hold down the F1 key near the top left of the keyboard until the system beeps and you see the Entering Setup message.
  4. At the BIOS lock screen, type the BIOS password ln14ovo and press ENTER.
  5. Use the left/right arrow keys to navigate to the Restart screen.
  6. Use the up/down arrow keys to highlight OS Optimized Defaults.
  7. Press the ENTER key and use the arrow keys to select Enabled. Press ENTER.
  8. Highlight Load Setup Defaults and press ENTER.
  9. Select Yes and press ENTER.
  10. Use the left/right arrow keys to navigate to the Security screen.
  11. Highlight Password and press ENTER.
  12. Highlight Supervisor Password and press ENTER.
  13. Enter the current BIOS password, ln14ovo and press ENTER.
  14. Enter the new BIOS password (of your own choosing) or leave it blank. Press ENTER.
  15. Repeat the new BIOS password or leave it blank. Press ENTER.
  16. Press ENTER to continue.
  17. Press the ESC key at the top left of the keyboard.
  18. Highlight Security Chip and press ENTER.
  19. Highlight Clear Security Chip and press ENTER.
  20. At the Clear encryption keys dialog, select Yes and press ENTER.
  21. Press the ESC key.
  22. Press the ESC key again.
  23. Highlight Exit Saving Changes and press ENTER.
  24. Highlight Yes and press ENTER.
  25. When the system boots into the BitLocker recovery screen, power off your computer. Hold the power button down for roughly five seconds.

Restore the Operating System

The second step to restoring your tablet is to restore the operating system. This step will delete all data on your computer and remove all La Salle High School restrictions. The recovery software we’ll use is called Clonezilla, which is available from clonezilla.org. Clonezilla will allow you to restore the Lenovo factory image to your computer.

  1. Start with the computer powered off and plugged-in to your charger.
  2. Unplug all storage devices (flash drives, SD cards, et cetera) from the computer. These extra devices may interfere with the imaging process.
  3. Insert your recovery USB drive into the USB port on the computer.
  4. Turn on the computer and hold down the F12 key until the system beeps and you see the Entering Boot Menu message.
    • Note: If your computer last booted into Windows, you may need to restart it from the Start Screen before you can access the boot menu.
  5. A boot menu will appear. Use the arrow keys to select the USB HDD option and press ENTER.
    • If you find that your arrow keys do not work. Power off the system by holding the power button and start again.
  6. Wait while Clonezilla boots. You will see lots of text scrolling off of the screen while it loads.
  7. When the system has booted, you will see a message that all existing data will be lost. Press y on the keyboard and hit ENTER to continue.
  8. You will be warned again that all existing data will be lost. Press y on the keyboard and hit ENTER to continue.
  9. Wait while the machine is re-imaged. This can take up to 30 minutes.
  10. When the imaging process is complete, the system will power off automatically.
  11. Once the system has powered off, you have successfully re-imaged your tablet!
  12. Remove your recovery media from the computer. Store it somewhere safe.

Configure the Operating System

The last step in restoring your computer to defaults is to configure your newly-installed operating system. This is fairly simple, and can probably be done without using this guide.

  1. Start with the computer powered off and plugged-in to your charger.
  2. When the computer boots, it will go through a series of processes to prepare Windows. It may reboot on its own during this setup process.
  3. When Windows is ready, follow the on-screen instructions to set up your computer.
  4. Wait while you are logged-in to the system for the first time.
  5. Congratulations, your computer is ready to use!
