Now that you are leaving La Salle High School, you may re-image your tablet in order to remove all La Salle High School restrictions and software. Doing so will delete all data on your tablet, so make sure your data is backed up. Note that if you are using File History in Windows 8.1 to back up your data, you will not be able to recover this data once you have restored Windows 7. Create a backup using some other method before following the steps in this guide.

With this guide, you should have received a USB flash drive (referred to as your recovery media) which contains your restore image. This will be used to restore your system to its factory state.

It is important that you do not modify or save any files on your recovery media! Doing so may prevent you from being able to restore your computer.

Restoring your tablet to its original state requires three general steps, listed below.

1. Restore the BIOS to factory defaults.
2. Restore the operating system to its default state.
3. Configure the operating system.

The order of these steps is important. If you do not restore your BIOS to factory defaults, you will not be able to restore your operating system; if you do not restore the operating system, you cannot configure it!

1. Your recovery media issued by La Salle High School.
2. Your HP EliteBook 2740p laptop computer.
3. This guide.
4. About 45-60 minutes.

The first step to restoring your tablet is to reset the BIOS settings. At La Salle, we restrict settings in the BIOS to improve security. In order for you to be able to boot your recovery media, you need to remove these restrictions. If your hard drive is encrypted, all of your data will be inaccessible after this step!

1. Start with the computer powered off and plugged-in to your charger.
2. Turn on the computer. When you see the HP logo, tap F10 on the keyboard. You will be taken to the BIOS login screen.
3. Enter the BIOS password hpstu2011 and press ENTER.
4. Click on the Reset BIOS security to factory default.
5. At the warning screen under Do you wish to proceed? click YES.
6. Click on the Restore Defaults.
7. At the Load Defaults screen, click Yes.
8. Click on Security at the top of the screen.
9. Scroll down using the arrow keys or arrows in the top right and click System IDs.
10. Click Notebook Ownership Tag.
11. Type your full name and press ENTER.
12. Click Notebook Ownership Tag 2.
13. Type your full phone number and press ENTER.
14. Click File at the top of the screen.
15. Click Save Changes and Exit.
16. At the Save Changes and Exit screen, click Yes. The computer will reboot.
17. After the HP logo, you will see a dialog prompting you to “Clear the TPM”. Press F1 on the keyboard to perform this action. The computer will reboot.
18. After the HP logo, you will see a dialog prompting you to “Reset Fingerprint Sensor to Factory Settings.” Press F1 on the keyboard to perform this action. The computer will reboot.
19. Shut down the computer.
    1. You may be presented with a BitLocker recovery screen. If this happens, hold down the power button until the tablet powers off.
20. The BIOS has now been restored to factory settings and is ready to be re-imaged.

The second step to restoring your tablet is to restore the operating system. This step will delete all data on your computer and in doing so will remove all La Salle restrictions. The recovery software we’ll use is called Clonezilla (available from http://clonezilla.org/). Clonezilla will allow you to re-image your machine.

1. Start with the computer powered off and plugged-in to your charger.
2. Unplug all storage devices (flash drives, SD cards, et cetera) from the computer as they may (at best) interfere with the imaging process, or may (at worst) be overwritten entirely.
3. Insert your recovery USB drive into the USB port on the computer.
4. Turn on the computer. When you see the HP logo, press F9 on the keyboard.
5. A boot menu will appear. Select the USB hard drive with the arrow keys and press enter.
6. Wait while Clonezilla boots. You will see lots of text scrolling off of the screen while it loads.
7. When the system has booted, you will see a message that all existing data will be lost. Press y on the keyboard and hit ENTER to continue.
8. You will be warned again that all existing data will be lost. Press y on the keyboard and hit ENTER to continue.
9. Wait while the machine is re-imaged. This can take 20-25 minutes.
10. When the imaging process is complete, the system will power off automatically.
11. Once the system has powered off, you have successfully re-imaged your tablet! Remove your recovery media from the computer. Store it somewhere safe.

The last step in restoring your computer to defaults is to configure your newly-installed operating system. This is fairly simple, and can probably be done without using this guide.

1. Start with the computer powered off and plugged-in to your charger.
2. When the computer boots, it will go through a series of processes to prepare Windows. It may reboot on its own during this setup process. This process will take less than five minutes.
3. When Windows is ready, you will see a dialog prompting you to select your language. Click My language is English and click Next to continue.
4. On the next page you will be prompted to select your Country, time and currency, and keyboard layout. You probably don’t need to change these, so press Next.
5. You will be asked to enter a username for yourself and a name for the computer. Type in your name and a name for the computer. When done, press Next.
   1. You can name your computer anything you want! Some people name their computers after superheroes, Roman gods, or even just their name and the computer’s model (such as Austin-2740p). The core idea is that it should be somewhat unique.
6. At the next screen, enter a password and password hint for your user account on the machine and click Next.
7. Read through the Microsoft Software License Terms and check the box if you accept them. These terms come directly from Microsoft.
8. Read through the End User License Agreement and check the box if you accept the license terms. These terms come directly from HP. Click Next to continue.
9. At the next window, you will decide if Windows will update automatically. Click Use recommended settings.
10. On the next screen, set the time zone to (UTC -05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada) (the time zone in Cincinnati, Ohio).
11. Set the time and date (if necessary) then click Next.
12. Next you may choose to connect to a nearby wireless network. If you do not have a network nearby, click Skip, otherwise click Next.
    1. If you are connected to a network, you can now choose your computer’s location. This affects what level of security is set on Windows firewall. If you are connected to your home network (or another network you trust) click Home network. This enables file sharing with other computers on that network (if you set it up). If you are not on a trusted network, click Public network.
13. Windows will now finalize your settings and install HP software. Expect this to take about five minutes.
14. At the Welcome to your New HP Computer screen, click the GO button.
15. If you would like to register your computer with HP, fill out the form. Otherwise click Register Later (recommended).
16. At the Stay Updated screen, under Do you want to receive updates and alerts from HP? click Yes, download and install updates automatically (recommended).
17. Under Do you want to participate in the Experience Improvement Program?, select No and click Next.
18. Click Finish.
19. Wait while Windows completes setup and loads your Desktop.
20. Once the Desktop appears, you have successfully configured your operating system. Your computer is ready to use.
