Sign a Document Digitally

Teachers and students with tablet PCs can utilize their tablet stylus to digitally sign documents. In Adobe Acrobat, you can create a handwritten digital signature once and then place that signature on documents to sign. In Microsoft Word, you can use the inking tools to place your signature.

Signing PDF Documents

You can use Adobe Acrobat to sign documents and add/edit their text. Here is a sample file you can download and try signing.

  1. Open the document in Adobe Acrobat.
    1. If Acrobat is not your default PDF application, right-click on your document, choose Open With, then Adobe Acrobat.
  2. In the top-right of the window, click “Sign”.
  3. In the right of the window, click “Place Signature”.
    1. If this is your first time, you will be asked to create a signature.
    2. In the list box under “How would you like to create your signature?”, choose “Draw my signature”.
    3. Using your tablet pen, draw your signature in the provided box.
      1. The signature preview will be somewhat low quality. Do not worry too much if some of your lighter pen strokes are not visible.
      2. If you do not like your signature, you can click “Clear Signature” at the top-right of the box.
    4. Once you have drawn your signature, click “Accept” in the bottom right.
  4. Your handwritten signature will now appear under your cursor. Move the signature to the location you would like to place it, then click once.
  5. If the signature is too large or two small, you can resize it by clicking on the squares in the corners of your signature. Same as you would resize an image in a Word document.
  6. Your signature is now placed.
    1. If you do not need to add any additional text (such as work title or the date) you can click File > Save. When asked if you want to finalize the changes, click Confirm. Then save the document as you normally would.

Adding Text to PDF Documents

  1. Click on Tools at the top-right of the Acrobat window.
  2. Click on Add Text under Content Editing in the right pane.
  3. Move the cursor to where you would like to add text. Generally, you want to place the bottom line of the cursor just a bit above where you want the bottom of your text to be. Click to start entering text.
    1. After you enter text, you may click again elsewhere to add more.
  4. When you are done adding text, go to File > Save. When asked if you want to finalize the changes, click Confirm. Then save the document as you normally would.
